School of Fashion Recognized by Vogue Business as a Fashion Education Leader

Fashion education has been changing in recent years as more students show an interest in activism and inclusivity. This has led to evolving curricula in fashion schools as faculty adjust to these new expectations. Vogue Business recently published the first part of an ongoing series about leaders in fashion education, which included Academy of Art University’s fashion school.

Fashion education refers to the training students receive to prepare them for a career in the industry. In past years, the focus of fashion education was more traditional. Students learned about the state of the industry and prepared for a career in this field. However, greater awareness of ecological and social issues is leading to a demand for curricula that prepares students to work toward making improvements in this field.

Changing the Focus of Fashion Education

As Simon Ungless, executive director of the Academy’s School of Fashion, explains in Vogue Business, “education should be fluid, not one-size-fits-all.” Ungless acknowledges the changing nature of fashion education, which he also discussed recently in an interview with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). In that interview, Ungless states that programs should be kept “short, concentrated, and student-centric,” and focus on ecological and social needs rather than fashion commerce.

The shift toward curricula that address these issues is causing educators to reevaluate their approach to fashion education. In addition to inclusivity and environmental concerns, students are interested in building a career that allows them to make the most of their skills while working for companies that value artists and designers.

Fashion School Degree Programs and Curriculum

As a leader in fashion education, the Academy’s School of Fashion offers a wide range of degree programs and curriculum for students to choose from. Some of these include Costume Design, Fashion Journalism, Fashion Art Direction , Fashion Product Development, and Fashion Marketing. These degree program options help ensure that students are able to build a fulfilling career in the fashion industry while working toward change.

Students at the Academy have many opportunities to improve their craft and gain first-hand experience working in the industry through scholarships, fashion shows, grants, and contests. In recent years, fashion students have participated in spring graduation fashion shows in New York and San Francisco, which allowed them to showcase their designs.
