Title IX: Sex Discrimination Prevention & Response

Title IX prohibits any type of sex discrimination in our educational programs and activities as well as our admission and employment practices. Sex discrimination includes, but is not limited to, instances of sexual assault, sexual harassment, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking. Academy of Art University’s prohibition on sex discrimination includes discrimination based on a student’s gender identity or expression, a student’s transgender status, pregnancy or parental status.

Academy of Art University will make every effort to ensure students’ safety whether they are a complainant, respondent or a participant in the Title IX complaint process. Supportive measures could include, but are not limited to:

• No contact orders
• Connecting students to counseling services
• Academic accommodations
• Housing accommodations
• Escort services
• Other appropriate actions as necessary

If the person contacting the Title IX Coordinator is only interested in obtaining supportive measures and not filing a Formal Complaint, the Title IX Coordinator does not need to notify the person the complaint is about (the respondent) of the name of the complainant, unless the particular supportive measures affects the respondent in a way that requires the respondent to know the identity of a complainant (i.e. mutual no contact order). In some cases, the Title IX Coordinator may need to disclose some information about a complainant to another University employee or Department in order to provide the necessary supportive measures.  The Title IX Coordinator will make this determination and will explain what information will be shared, who the information will be shared with and the reason(s) for sharing that information.

If  the person contacting the Title IX Coordinator wishes to file a Formal Complaint alleging sexual harassment, each party’s identity will need to be disclosed to the other so both parties may meaningfully participate in the University’s grievance process. This information will be shared between the parties in the written notice of allegations.  No further personally identifiable information, such as addresses or student identification numbers will be included in the written notice.  For more information or any questions regarding confidentiality, please contact Nattiel Arias the Title IX Coordinator at (415) 618-6498.
