Every semester, students from Academy of Art University’s School of Industrial Design participate in a Corporate Sponsorship Project. These interdisciplinary design projects bring students from diverse majors at the Academy together with industry to learn the skills needed to hit the ground running upon graduation.
Designing for the Future
The 6-episode video series below showcases collaborative work Academy students did with automobile manufacturer Subaru. Follow the students as they tackle every aspect of a real-world collaboration with a major industry leader, from concept to pitch.
Episode 1: Brand is Born
The challenge? Create a vision for the Subaru brand in the year 2030. Our multi-disciplinary teams begin working together to create holistic experiences and products.
Episode 2: Stop, Collaborate, and Listen
Collaboration is key. Students from the Schools of Industrial Design, Interior Architecture & Design, Advertising, Fashion, and Advertising form teams and begin developing their concepts.
Episode 3: Midterm Madness
Will the students impress the Subaru designers? It’s midterms, and students are well into the design phase of their projects. Each team is preparing for their first major presentations to Subaru’s design team, and the excitement is evident in their work.
Episode 4: Bringing Design to Life
The teams have pitched their best ideas to Subaru, and begin to craft their designs into a cohesive story with storyboards, clay models, UX/UI, and advertising materials. Subaru’s sculptor pays a visit and provides tips on how to bring design to life.
Episode 5: Time Crunch
Our students are feeling the heat, putting in 12-hour days and pulling late nights. With the major components almost finalized, it all comes down to the details now.
Episode 6: The Big Pitch
The time has finally come for our teams to present their hard work to Subaru’s design team. Will Subaru be blown away? Will the students deliver on their challenge? It all comes down to this moment.
